Nacelle Bedplate

This is a design I made for the bedplate of the nacelle of a wind turbine. I redesigned our nacelle bedplate with the goal of making it lighter, stiffer, and easier to assemble than our previous version. I gave the plate a tapered profile so it’s wider at the generator end, where most of the mass sits, and narrows toward the rear, cutting weight without giving up support where it matters.

The main shaft is carried by two raised bearing towers. I blended them into the plate with smooth fillets and tied them together with a cross brace so they resist bending and twisting under rotor loads and stay aligned with each other. At the front, a vertical mounting flange with a bolt pattern holds the generator square to the shaft, and its larger disc shape spreads the mounting load across the plate.

Below the bedplate, a cylindrical adapter connects the nacelle to the tower and gives it a clean axis to yaw about. A center pass-through hole lets the generator wiring run straight down the tower instead of snaking around the outside. The rectangular slots throughout the plate locate the mating parts during assembly and also remove material where it wasn’t carrying much load.
